About Center for Civilians in Conflict
Center for Civilians in Conflict’s mission is to improve protection for civilians caught in conflicts around the world. We call on and advise international organizations, governments, militaries, and armed non-state actors to adopt and implement policies, tools, and training to prevent civilian harm. When civilians are harmed we advocate for the provision of amends and post-harm assistance. We bring the voices of civilians themselves to those making decisions affecting their lives.
Our communications goals:
CIVIC is embarking on an ambitious three-year plan to raise our profile in order to increase awareness around our issue, establish our officers as thought leaders and subject matter experts, and raise the organization's profile through traditional, online and social media. To do so, we’ll require the production of high-quality communications products.
Internship duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Drafting news releases, statements and policy briefs, op-eds, blog posts, and other communication materials;
- Designing reports, policy briefs, and marketing materials for online distribution;
- Assisting in redesign of CIVIC web site;
- Work with team on organizational branding book;
- Managing press lists and inputting on strategy;
- Conducting research related to major projects, campaigns or events;
- Conducting media outreach;
- Performing print, broadcast, and online media monitoring and measurement;
- Assisting with communications and creative work as needed; and
- Functioning as a self-sustaining member of our team.
This is an opportunity to gain experience working with an international advocacy organization and build a strong communications portfolio.
This internship is open to current graduate level students, those who have recently completed graduate studies, or undergraduate students with relevant work experience with an interest in non-profit communications. Interns will work closely with the Communications Manager on writing/editing, press relations, and other relevant communications products and projects as needed.
Applicants should be flexible and have confidence in handling multiple tasks, as well as the ability to work independently. Interns will be expected to maintain a level of confidentiality and discretion when working with sensitive information. Skills in social media (metrics, analysis, etc.) and basic Web design are highly valuable, as is any prior journalism or communications experience. Having a keen eye for design wouldn’t hurt, either.
Application Deadline: Open until filled
Minimum Time Requirement: Qualified applicants should be available for a minimum 15 hours/week for a period of at least 3 months. Applicants based in Washington, DC, preferred.
This is an unpaid internship with a small stipend for food and travel.
