What's cool about this job
We have amazing opportunities for TWO internships: Copywriting Internship & Design/Art Director Internship.
Copywriting Internship Overview:
  • Do you like air? Did you just find out copywriting is a thing people can do for money? Do you want to learn how to combine both of those things over the course of a three-month transformative learning experience? Also, sometimes there’s free backpacks.
  • 12-week program
  • Paid internship (no college credit)
  • The team will be given a real project focused on one of REI’s core values. They will own it from concept to execution working closely with our in-house creatives and creative directors.
  • As an intern, you will get hands-on experience by supporting our in-house creatives on everything from our campaigns to experiences.
  • Learn why a life outdoors is a life well lived. There will be plenty of opportunities throughout the summer to get outside and enjoy the long days and amazing weather but not get sunburned.

Copywriting Internship Requirements:

  • Current student or recent graduate with a focus in advertising, marketing, communications, journalism or English. Maybe even one of those nontraditional degrees where you get teacher evaluations instead of grades.
  • Copywriting portfolio demonstrating strategic thinking and skills across print, digital, social & video. (Fake ads, real thinking)
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with quick deadlines.
  • Impeccable communication skills—you’ll have to talk through and explain your work.
  • Desire to create something awesome
  • Team player and collaborative.
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign or willingness to become familiar with Adobe InDesign.
  • Bonus: Expert in Adobe CS programs—Photoshop, Illustrator and After Effects
  • You don’t hate going outside.
  • Bonus: knowledge of outdoor slang terms like breakfast burrito or sleeping bag
  • Bonus: You have a friend named Leif
  • Bonus: You have one of those tattoos of a big tree
  • Bonus: You’re from somewhere cool like Alaska or Texas
  • Bonus: Your mom wants you to be a doctor
  • No littering

Design/Art Director Internship Overview:
  • 12-week program
  • Paid internship (no college credit)
  • Outdoorsy creatives who want to get better and do good at the same time. (You don’t actually have to be outdoorsy. But you can’t be a litterbug.) Aspiring designers and art directors who want to learn from experts in design, design systems, marketing strategy and other design-y things. Marshmallow experience preferred.
  • Hone your creative thinking and technical design skills by working, collaborating and learning from senior creatives
  • Team up, own and work on real projects with another creative intern
  • Support senior creatives on varied, exciting projects across the co-op

Design/Art Director Internship Requirements:
  • Current student or recent graduate with a focus in visual communication (design or art direction)
  • Portfolio demonstrating strategic thinking, design and/or illustration skills across different media
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with quick deadlines
  • Great communication skills
  • Passion for creating
  • Team player and collaborative
  • Skilled in Adobe CS programs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator—Bonus points for After Effects)

Bring your passion and expertise
You’ll love it here because REI Co-op is awesome and you just can’t not love it. The nation’s largest consumer co-op, REI is a growing community of more than 18 million members who demand quality gear, expert classes and trips, and famously awesome customer service. Since 1938, REI has worked to turn indoorsy people into outdoorsy people through sustainable growth and reinvestment into the communities it serves. In 2019, nearly 70 percent of its profits went right back to the outdoor community, supporting employee retirement, helping fund trail work, returning dividends to its members and supporting nonprofits that get people into the outdoors.

At REI we offer an enviable work environment that Fortune Magazine has recognized on the "100 Best Places to Work" list since the award's inception – 23 years in a row! Sure, we work hard, but it’s balanced with time off to play—a strategy that works for us as we continue to grow and thrive. Want to enjoy a workplace where you can be yourself, be heard and be respected while having a job that challenges you? This is the place.

With more than 160 retail locations (and growing), REI offers unique competitive benefits to its more than 15,000 employees, including healthcare, gear and apparel discounts, free equipment rentals and challenge grants to help employees reach personal outdoor goals, generous retirement plan contributions, public transit subsidy, adoptions assistance, paid sabbaticals, and more.

REI is an Equal Opportunity Employer
