South Hill Residency is seeking a Crew Leader Inmate for the Lawrenceville Area Headquarters to perform a variety of highway maintenance activities and procedures; operate specialized equipment in routine maintenance and/or emergency operations; and provide on-the-job training and direction to inmate crews performing roadway maintenance activities. You will coordinate, plan, and oversee inmate work activities involved in highway maintenance activities; schedule and direct activities to ensure compliance with DOC standards for the performance of inmates; assign inmates and inmate crews to specific jobs and inspect the quality and quantity of work performed; prepare reports and paperwork to report accomplishments and equipment, materials and manpower used, as well as any issues that may arise; and operate equipment to transport inmates to and from work site and ensure all inmates are accounted for. When not working inmates, may oversee work of assigned roadway crews performing roadway maintenance activities and operate maintenance equipment and perform preventative maintenance and heavy manual labor. You will maintain state roadways for safe driving by operating and preparing equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations and support emergency operations including storm damage repairs. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment package for Brunswick, Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Counties.
Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs related to roadway construction and maintenance. Demonstrated ability to plan work schedules and assign manpower, materials, and equipment needed to accomplish the job and to complete reports and records. Ability to provide technical direction and guidance to a variety of laborers; to complete reports and records; to perform heavy manual labor, and to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Skill in operating and maintaining hand and power tools and light, medium, and heavy duty equipment. Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Ability to obtain Department of Corrections Inmate and Firearms certifications and work zone safety and flagger certification. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Experience in roadway maintenance and/or construction and equipment operations and inmate supervision. Possession of Department of Corrections Inmate and Firearms, Work Zone Safety, and Flagger certifications preferred. Valid CDL preferred. Experience performing emergency operations to include snow removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up. High school graduate/GED preferred and/or equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
Ability to work around hazardous materials, traffic, and noise and provide on-the-job training, coordination and direction of work activities to full-time, seasonal, emergency, and inmate crews. Position is designated essential in emergency operation events and is required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Valid driver's license and safety shoes required. References, work history, background check and DMV records will be verified.
