Job Description and Responsibilities:

Coherent, Inc. has an immediate opening for a Firmware Engineer to join the technical staff of the CO2 and Low Power Fiber Laser business unit located in Bloomfield and East Granby, CT.  This business unit operates in a fast-paced, exciting environment where a self-motivated engineer has opportunities to grow while developing leading-edge products. This individual will report directly to the Manager of Electronics & Software Engineering and will be an integral part of Coherent’s existing electronics design team consisting of a number of experienced engineers and technicians.  This position will:

  • Support the design, development, and integration of real time embedded control hardware and software for a variety of laser systems and applications
  • Participate in the design and development of diagnostics, controls, and other critical analog and digital functions embedded in a variety of pulsed and CW OEM laser systems
  • Support existing products by performing failure analysis, troubleshooting existing designs, evaluating design improvements, and providing production support
  • Execute hands-on work in the laboratory
  • Participate in the overall system architecture and requirements definition

Education and Work Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or related field
  • 2+ years of laboratory experience (academic or industry)
  • Experience using Matlab and Simulink
  • Experience in C and C# (Microchip and Visual Studio experience preferred)
  • Experience with various communication protocols and interfaces such as TCP/IP, USB, CAN, SPI, I2C, and RS-232/422/485
  • Experience with real time signal processing and data communication -  firmware development for embedded systems and PC based GUI development for user interfacing
  • Experience with programmable logic design using VHDL (Altera experience preferred, Xilinx experience desirable

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering or related field
  • Familiarity with analog and digital circuit design and the use of general purpose test equipment (oscilloscopes, waveform generators, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Altium Designer
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
