Job Description
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is delighted to announce an opening for a graduate student position as a Paper Conservation Summer Intern. Mentoring future conservation professionals is a priority for the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and supports the VMFA's strategic plan. The selected candidate will spend ten (10) weeks working under the supervision of the Paper Conservator. The focus will be on learning about conservation materials and practices, performing technical analysis, executing conservation treatments, documenting all conservation work, collaborating with other VMFA departments, and presenting research to VMFA staff, regional conservators, and the general public.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have an understanding of the AIC code of ethics and guidelines for practice. S/he should have some demonstrated experience in conservation treatment, documentation, housing, and handling of works on paper.
Preferred Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in studio art, art history, and/or chemistry preferred. The successful candidate should be enrolled in an accredited graduate conservation program and have experience working in a conservation lab under the supervision of a professional conservator.
Special Requirements
This position is grant funded and is subject to the continuation of funds. The selected intern will be paid $15/hour for the 10-week internship. There is some flexibility in the start and end dates for this internship between mid-May to August. Candidates selected for interviews should be prepared to discuss their general summer availability during the interview. The selected candidate must pass a criminal history background check.
