Job Description

AECOM Transportation is seeking a current Transportation Planning Intern to assist the transportation planning group on various transit projects and transportation studies in the Washington, DC area.
The successful candidate will be based in AECOM's Arlington, Virginia office where the multi-disciplinary planning team is working for a range of respected clients on projects that are shaping the transportation future of the Washington, DC and greater metropolitan region.
AECOM's Washington, DC-area transportation practice comprises planners, engineers, architects, economists, travel demand forecasters, and support staff and is responsible for conducting a variety of transportation planning, policy analysis, and concept and preliminary design/engineering studies for multi-modal initiatives for local, state, and federal clients in the region. Example projects include alternatives assessments, feasibility studies, corridor studies, regional/statewide plans, environmental studies (NEPA documentation), facility planning/design, TOD/station-area plans, and cross-disciplinary tasks with other business lines.
The graduate intern will support project management and task leaders in completing technical work, and meeting project milestones for our practice's portfolio of ongoing assignments.
Job responsibilities include:
  • Developing and managing content for presentations, reports, and proposals
  • Conducting public outreach efforts (meeting logistics, distributing surveys, attending public meetings)
  • Researching industry standard / best practices
  • Participating in site visits and field work
  • Performing data collection and analysis
  • Writing and editing technical reports
  • Attending project team meetings, as needed

Minimum Requirements
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, transportation planning, or a similar field
  • Must have finished at least 1 year of degree program
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Currently residing in the Washington, DC or Richmond, VA areas or willing to relocate for the duration of the internship
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time
  • Willing to work outside standard business hours when needed
  • Passionate about transportation and urban planning
  • A positive attitude and ability to work collaboratively with others
  • AECOM will not provide job relocation assistance.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledgeable in ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Cloud Services (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
  • Prior relevant work experience
