Operations is one of the largest divisions in the firm and has diverse responsibilities, including correctly settling and recording millions of transactions per day, identifying and mitigating all operational risks, developing strong client relationships and partnering with technology to realize the full potential of IT and e-solutions. Throughout, the Operations department continually seeks ways to improve while actively supporting the development of new businesses, structures and markets.
Background on the Team
Morgan Stanley US Tax Operations is a cross-divisional operational utility that supports Retail, Institutional, and Corporate business lines. Tax Operations is responsible for ensuring compliance with IRS & State Regulations related to US tax withholding, reporting, and filing obligations across Morgan Stanley’s Retail and Institutional based clients and legal entities.
Background on the Position
Tax Operations is seeking a Strategic Planning Specialist that will be responsible for executing on the organization's strategic and long-range goals, complete periodic health checks of operational processes/controls to ensure they are operating as designed, constructing recommendations based on emerging trends and internal business process improvement; as well as ensuring adherence to tax regulations.
This is a challenging position that requires risk, control, and strategic program management skills; as well as an advanced understanding of IRS regulations. The successful candidate will have strong tax technical knowledge and demonstrate the ability to understand tax regulations and facilitate the necessary operational processes and governance in order to ensure compliance.
The successful candidate will have the ability to operate across number functional areas at the firm, including operations, technology, risk, and tax. The candidate must be risk-focused with an understanding of various types of risk across the organization and client segment, with a strong focus on regulatory & franchise risk, and be charged with monitoring for regulatory compliance risk.
High Level Primary Responsibilities include:
-Partner and liaise with other members of Tax Operations and other external divisions to execute on the organization’s strategy
-Work closely with Technology and PMO teams to implement various system enhancements
-Work closely with Business Partners to improve data management and upstream processes
-Monitor Tax Operational processes and procedures for compliance, operational effectiveness, and strong internal control
-Develop and measure appropriate key performance indicators for the team and drive their improvement
-Provide Oversight over Risk Deliverables for Tax Operations, including Risk and Control Self Assessments (RCSA)
-Effectively communicate program status
-Ability to consistently identify inefficiencies in processes, escalate problems, and propose and execute solutions.
-Ability to put together polished presentations for senior stakeholders regularly on short notice
-Ability to deliver polished presentations to senior stakeholders on short notice
-Ability to multitask and take ownership and drive resolution of complex issues
-Ability to manage a team of operations professionals within defined SLAs
-Critical attention to detail and meeting deadlines
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills
-Good analytical and problem solving skills
-Ability to conduct themselves effectively with senior management
-Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of eight years of experience within a financial services or operations environment

-Teamwork skills: Strong ability to prioritize, work efficiently and accurately under pressure in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment
-Client Management skills: Demonstrated ability in being flexible and working with stakeholders and colleagues at all experience levels
-Analytical skills: Highly analytical and investigative skills, with experience in using objective data to drive strategic recommendations
-Client Relationship skills: Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact and build relationships with internal and external clients
-Proactive, self-starter with a motivation to learn quickly
-Experience in Tax Operations and Project Management is a must; Risk and Control experience is desirable
-Critical Thinking skills: Ability to think outside of the box and think creatively in order to structure a team from the ground up
