Department Description:

National Medicaid is a newly formed KFHP Program Office department charged with leading the KP Medicaid line of business.  Medicaid supports Kaiser Permanente’s mission by serving the medical and non-medical needs of some of our most vulnerable members.  KP Medicaid membership has grown significantly since the Affordable Care Act, we are now over 1 million members.   

National Medicaid is charged with: 


  • Building Medicaid organization and care delivery model that will deliver sustainable membership growth and maximize revenue under an efficient cost structure. 

  • Developing and forging new internal and external partnerships to deliver innovative operating models, focused on whole person care and with connection to safety net health and social service providers. 

  • Positioning KP as a national Medicaid leader in advancing Medicaid policy that aligns with the mission and vision of Kaiser Permanente. 

  • Ensuring KP meets all State and federal Medicaid regulations 

Position Description:

The intern will support Kaiser Permanente’s collaborations with safety net partners. Kaiser Permanente is committed to building partnerships with the health care "safety net" — institutions that play a critical role in delivering health care for the uninsured and underserved.  The health care safety net includes Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), public health systems, and other health care providers that serve Medicaid and the uninsured in KP’s communities. KP has deep relationships with the safety net and Community Health has contributed substantially to their infrastructure with funding for capital improvements, quality improvement, and core support, as well as providing technical expertise from operational and clinical experts within KP to support safety net providers. The intern will:


  • Contribute to strategy development through the compilation and analysis of safety net data related to Medicaid and Community Health projects.

  • Conduct and synthesize strategic research on policy and best-practices to inform program development of new initiatives focused on supporting the safety net to improve health outcomes.

  • Interface with KP and safety net leaders to understand current issues and opportunities in Medicaid and Community Health.

  • Pursuing a graduate degree or have completed a graduate program from an accredited university within the last year.

Additional Requirements:

• Aptitude to perform data and process analytics and formulating solutions.

• 3.0 GPA or above

• Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills

• Proven ability to build effective working relationships as well as strong interpersonal skills.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Ability to learn quickly and experience producing high quality work in short periods of time.
