WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Civil/Transportation Engineer for our San Bernardino, CA office.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated candidate with experience in the design and task management of highway and roadway projects that will support our two biggest clients in the Inland Empire, SBCTA and RCTC. This position will function as a Transportation Design Lead Engineer, and lead a project team in the development and delivery of the highway, roadway and other civil design work. The primary responsibilities include leading a team of engineers and support staff by providing technical leadership while performing various transportation and civil engineering tasks such as highway design, geometrics, plan and profile, super-elevation, signing, striping, ADA accessibility, staging, and coordination with other design disciplines for the overall highway/roadway design  for the final PS&E development, special provisions, cost estimating, quality controls, and a variety of other tasks and duties. The role will also include collaboration within project and stakeholder teams.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform transportation design tasks for civil/highway projects requiring independent judgment in the evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard design or engineering techniques and procedures
  • Perform highway design tasks and prepare calculations on projects for geometrics, plan and profile, super-elevation, signing, striping, ADA accessibility, staging, contour grading, site work, and underground utilities from conceptual and preliminary engineering to final design
  • Responsible for coordination with other design disciplines, including drainage, structures, environmental, traffic, electrical, utilities and right of way
  • Responsible for preparation of project reports, plans, specifications, and estimate bid packages
  • Ensure that production of specifications, reports and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements
  • Interact with clients, and lead technical project design meetings
  • Supervise the production of AutoCAD or MicroStation drafting to support various design teams
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited program
  • Seven (7) years of experience in the task/design management, technical design and preparation of Caltrans project reports and construction contract documents for highway design projects using the Caltrans Highway Design Manual and Plans Preparation Manual
  • California PE registration, or ability to receive within 6 months
  • Experience related to highway and roadway infrastructure and transportation market, particularly focused on transportation engineering design
  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and ability to work within a team environment
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office, AutoCAD Civil 3D or MicroStation V8i and Inroads
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited program
  • Knowledge of the southern California market
  • Knowledge and understanding of AASHTO Highway Design Guide, California MUTCD, Greenbook / APWA standards, and other related standards.
  • Experience on projects with Caltrans and/or FHWA oversight
  • Knowledge of Advanced Engineering Software (AES), Flowmaster, WSPG, HEC RAS, the Rational Method, and Unit Hydrographs
