Job Description and Responsibilities:

Patent attorney or patent agent reporting to the corporate Intellectual Property Department. The successful candidate will prepare and prosecute patent applications directed to optical technology, photonic devices, laser devices, and laser material processing inventions. This includes all aspects of handling an invention, including reviewing initial disclosures, prior-art searching, patenting strategy, preparing patent applications, and prosecution in the US, Europe, and other jurisdictions. This is challenging and technical work.

The patent attorney / agent will work with inventors and engineering management to identify and distill novel inventions that have value. The patent attorney / agent is a full participant in the small team of in-house and outside counsel that protects inventions and manages the IP portfolio in accordance with business goals. The successful candidate will be assigned other IP tasks and responsibilities, depending on their experience, interest, and professional development.

The Intellectual Property Department supports all of the company research and development sites and all of the technical business units. Coherent inventions typically fall within or span the optical, mechanical, electrical, software, firmware, material processing, metrological, and material science arts.


Education and Work Experience:

United State Patent and Trademark Office registration

BS or MS degree in physics, engineering, or a related scientific discipline

Three years' experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the optic arts and at least some of the related arts listed above

Direct experience or a working knowledge of optical technology, photonics devices, laser devices, or laser material processing is an advantage

Attention to technical and administrative detail, ability to prioritize, and strong communication skills
