General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies located in State College PA is seeking an experienced CAD / Drafting Technician to join our product design team. We only consider highly self-motivated candidates that perform their work without significant assistance or direction. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a technical background with demonstrated experience and possess the ability to work effectively within a small development team. D TASKS:




  • Create new and/or revise existing three-dimensional Computer Aided Design (CAD) models of mechanical parts and assemblies to support developing and maintaining our product line
  • Create new and/or revise existing two dimensional drawings or prints using CAD software, and bills of material for our products
  • Create and revise electrical drawings and schematic documents with various inputs from design engineers
  • ·Develop printed circuit board (PCB) physical layouts from schematic information and direction from the design engineers
  • Produce manufacturing documentation suitable for the fabrication of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA)
  • Determine scaling; insert necessary reference planes, centering and dimension lines, hidden line interpolations, and sectioning; prepares specifications for parts, assemblies, and installations; prepares complete production detail drawings; contributes design modifications to improve quality of product or facilitate manufacturing operations
  • Checks drawings versus the project input for correctness and conformance to standard engineering drafting practices and standards
  • Works with engineers regarding model accuracy, design, drafting standards and ECN/ECR documentation
  • Creates Engineering Change Notices detailing the necessary changes to released designs, updates drawings/models/BOMs as needed, and routes change requests through the approval process
  • Creates and revises documentation detailing assembly and/or testing
  • May work with system management including file maintenance, backup and storage
  • Researches and interfaces with vendors on products that meet job design requirements
  • Uses the Engineering Change database to implement changes in a design document to cut costs where needed and record changes that are needed to improve on a product
  • Works under limited supervision
  • Possess necessary computer skills to proficiently handle routine tasks



  • General knowledge of design principles and techniques including computer aided design (CAD)
  • Trained/ experienced in the use of current strategic Mechanical CAD tools (SolidWorks and AutoDesk preferred)
  • Experience in the capture of electronic schematics and electrical diagrams
  • Experience and training in the development of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layouts including component placement, trace routing & design verification.
  • Trained/ experienced in the use of PCB design tools (Xpedition preferred)
  • General knowledge of design documentation standards (e.g ASME Y14.5M, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Aware of simple mechanical stress; structural, thermal and tolerance analysis
  • Should possess initiative as well as strong organizational & problem-solving skills
  • Works within the trade space defined (cost / schedule / technology)
  • Applies general knowledge effectively in team environment
  • Able to accept and integrate constructive feedback
  • Demonstrates the ability to weigh risks and make progress in the face of uncertainty
  • Willingly takes on problems and commits to solutions
  • General proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Fulfills role as a reliable team member and understands own role within team
  • Manages time to ensure an assignment's completion


Additional consideration will be given for exceptional candidates with significant experience in one or more of the following areas

  • Experience with the particular design requirements of RF and microwave communications equipment (e.g. familiarity with material and tolerance requirements for these types of products)
  • Basic abilities to use management tools such as Microsoft Project to track task status
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools and use of quick-turn prototyping vendors
  • Experience in light fabrication of prototype, proof-of-concept models, or mockups of designed parts
