This Senior-level Engineering position will focus on providing advanced Engineering support and expertise to the Southwest Technical Operations organization. This includes specialized aircraft, engine, and component repairs, modifications, and troubleshooting accomplished on the Southwest fleet.


This position will support the Engineering and Maintenance Operations at our Chicago, IL (MDW) base from Southwest Headquarters in Dallas, TX.  The schedule for this role is exclusively night shift and will be eligible for the Shift Differential Policy.  The schedule will be Monday through Thursday from 10:00pm to 8:00am (10 hour shifts).  This role will also require 25% to 30% travel - primarily to Chicago (MDW).

• Evaluate and process manufacturer’s service documents (Service Bulletins, Service Letters, etc.), regulatory requirements (Airworthiness Directives, Notice of Proposed Rule Making, Code of Federal Regulations, etc.)

• Responsible for development and substantiation of in-house repairs and modifications for implementation into the SWA maintenance program.

• Develop and substantiate Reliability improvements through research, root-cause analysis and implementation through corrective action plans.

• Acts as a subject matter expert in their assigned areas of responsibility

• Oversees assigned projects to ensure success and timeliness of deliverables (e.g. scheduling, technical risk oversight, deliverables tracking).

• Leads activities related to OEM products, Supplemental Type Certificate Holder products, Regulatory agencies, etc.

• Point of contact for troubleshooting and resolving in-service issues.

• Acts as a mentor/leader of the engineering Team, including responsibility for the training of entry level engineers.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Engineering Manager and can assume the duties of the Engineering Manager as delegated





High School Diploma or GED



Bachelor's Degree

Bachelor of Science in an ABET accredited course of study in Engineering. A related field of study is acceptable with 12 years Airline/OEM/MRO Engineering experience


Advanced Degree

Engineering or related field




8 Years

Airline/OEM/MRO Engineering


6 Years

Airline/OEM/MRO Engineering with a Master’s degree in Engineering or related field


4 Years

4 years Airline/OEM/MRO Engineering with Doctorate degree in Engineering or related field


12 Years

Airline/OEM/MRO Engineering experience in lieu of a non-ABET accredited degree


  • FAA Airframe and Powerplant license preferred.



• Ability to perform work duties from [limited space work station/desk/office area] for extended periods of time

• Ability to use a computer with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job

• Ability to bend, stand, and sit for extended periods of time

• Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job

• Ability to travel long hallways in large buildings and in between campus buildings

Must be able to communicate effectively via telephone as well as within group settings. Excellent writing skills are required as well as a proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. • Must have working knowledge of FAR's with a strong emphasis on Part 25 requirements and Part 121 operations.

• Must be proficient in common business computer applications.

• Must have some CAD design skills and experience.

• Must have an excellent understanding of technical data and mechanical operations.

• Must be able to work well with others as part of a team.

• Creates an atmosphere of trust and respect between self and others in the work group.

• Must be able to communicate effectively inside and outside the engineering organization.

• Must be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Must be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelines.
