Job Description


The New York Public Library (the Library) is looking for a Senior UX Designer (Temporary grant-funded through April 2021) to help shape the Library’s digital experience, ensuring products meet standards of visual design, accessibility, and overall user experience in order to advance and support the mission of the Library.  

 

The ideal candidate will be inspired by the breadth and depth of the Library’s patrons and offerings, be committed to Accessible and inclusive design, have experience working on large or connected projects from ideation to completion, and be comfortable organizing the UX teams work on a day-to-day basis.

Own:

  • Execution of long-term UX goals by being heavily involved in the end-to-end product design process
  • Transforming UX strategy into guidelines and standards that will be used throughout the digital organization
  • The definition, planning and prioritization of user requirements per project
  • Design decisions for projects based on overall UX strategy
  • On-time delivery from the UX team

Teach:

  • UX best practices to the Digital team and the larger Library
  • Modular design, especially within a Design System,  to the Digital team and the larger Library

Learn:

  • About NYPL - our culture, goals and strategy and the environment in which we work
  • About the specific challenges that digital technology introduces for our patrons, the Library in general and the work of our staff, vendors and partners
  • About the wide variety of patrons and staff who use NYPL as well as the large array of programs and services NYPL offers.

Improve:

  • Management of UX resources in collaboration with Product and Project Management
  • Ideation and collaboration between UX and the larger Library
  • Our ability to connect patrons, in the digital space,  to the specific materials and features they need


Our expectations for this person are that within…

1 month, this person will:

  • Be familiar with NYPL’s Design System
  • Contribute to sprint planning
  • Contribute to individual projects that are in-flight
  • Start to understand and appreciate the goals and constraints that determine our UX decision-making 
  • Craft personal goals
  • Get to know and start to build cooperative relationships within the Digital team

3 months, this person will:

  • Provide design direction for individual projects,  determining which UX decisions are most appropriate based on goals, budget, and priority
  • Provide direction for UX patterns included in NYPL’s Design System
  • Be able to schedule UX resourcing across multiple projects
  • Contribute to longer-term user testing strategy
  • Get to know and start to build cooperative relationships across the Larger Library

6 months and beyond, this person will:

  • Develop, maintain, and evolve cohesive visual identity and design patterns, contributing to the development of NYPL’s larger user experience
  • Inform product decisions and strategies based on qualitative and quantitative research


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required
  • 5 years’ experience as a UX designer, with a demonstrated track record of creating thoughtful products that improve users’ experience
  • Experience working with Content Management Systems in publishing or similar environment
  • A proven understanding of evidence-based, user-centered design, and user engagement principles
  • Strong skills in visual design, interaction design, typography, and information hierarchy 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly detail-oriented and developed organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
  • Experience managing a project or small team
  • Proven ability to work both as part of a team in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment
