Job Description


  • Participate in multidisciplinary meetings (i.e. daily morning rounds, and treatment team planning), in-service training - by unit, department, and discipline.
  • Communicates with peers and colleagues in a professional manner, and utilizes hand-off communication to relay pertinent patient information.
  • Assesses patient for suicidal ideation and reports same to psychiatrist and other treatment team members.
  • Obtains specimens and performs waive-testing including glucose finger sticks, phlebotomy, and EKG.
  • Assess, plan and implement nursing care. Coordinates care needs of the patient including clinical appointments.
  • Guide unlicensed staff in patient care activities (i.e. community meetings, small group patient meetings, use of seclusion and suicide precautions, elopement risks).
  • Provide a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient.
  • Assess and monitors patients in restraints or seclusion as per departmental guidelines.
  • Participates in patient satisfaction activities and communicates with patient and family in a respectful manner.
  • Monitor and records patient's reaction to medications and behavioral treatment.
  • Ensure safety of patients going off unit or offsite to diagnostic, legal or therapeutic activities.
  • Support efforts for affirmative patient outcomes and positive patient perception of care.
  • Participates in patient-family conferences, and provides patient and family education regarding treatment, medications and care after discharge.
  • Acts as Charge nurse in the absence of Head Nurse or Assistant Head Nurse.
  • Delegate assignment to team members based on patient acuity and skill level of team member.
  • Investigates and intervenes on problems and occurrences involving patients and reports same in a timely fashion using the line of communication and following the Escalation policy.
  • Expedites patient flow by promptly reporting patient admissions and discharges.
  • Conforms to and promotes observance of policies and procedures established by the Department of Nursing/Patient Care Services as well as Safety and Infection Control regulations.
  • Ensures availability and readiness of Code Blue cart as assigned.
  • Checks and maintains per level of unit supplies and medications.
  • Functions in a calm manner during crisis situations including Code Grey and Code Blues.
  • Participates in the unit based quality assurance monitoring activities.
  • Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities for self-development.
  • Attends nursing and health-related continuing education activities, conferences, lectures and seminars.
  • Participates in nursing, behavioral health and hospital committees when appointed.
  • Acts as a role model for professional behavior including being in conformance with policies and procedures established by the hospital and the Department of Nursing/Patient Care Services.
  • Observes attendance and notification of absence regulations established by the Department of Nursing/Patient Care Services.
  • Arrives and leaves the unit according to time regulations and takes breaks as scheduled.
  • Observes uniform/ dress code of the Department of Nursing/Patient Care Services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed and currently registered or otherwise duly authorized to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.
  • Life Support Certification(s): BLS
  • Other Certification/Skills: PMCS
