Job Description

The Staff Nurse in Ambulatory Care Services is a Nursing Practitioner who contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing regimen for patients seen in the department. Under the direction and leadership of the Head Nurse, the Staff Nurse is guided by a thorough knowledge of nursing theory, principles, and standards of quality nursing care, and the policy and procedures of the Nursing Department.

  • Reports directly to the Head Nurse/ Charge Nurse.
  • Assess patients based on interview of patient and/or significant other, chart review, and referrals from other health team members and outside agencies.
  • Collects data on patients receiving care in the clinic and assists MD with all examinations.
  • Educates and teaches patients based on diagnosis and need.
  • Initiates appropriate nursing interventions and update medical record as needed.
  • Provide counseling and teaching for clinic patients and their families/significant others who are new or referred by the physician.
  • When indicated, schedule appointments for nurse follow-up visits, i.e. anti-coagulant management and compliance, blood pressure check, diabetic self-care and insulin therapy.
  • Triage patients who present to clinic without appointments.
  • Participate in Preventive health measures and case findings.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the administration of nebulizer and/or metered dose inhalation therapy.
  • Maintains a level of cultural competence.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and data collection of ambulatory care/unit based performance improvement projects.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Licensed and currently registered or otherwise duly authorized to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
2. Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.
