Job Description
The Virginia Department of State Police is recruiting for qualified Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certified Virginia Law Enforcement applicants for the position of Virginia State Police Trooper - Lateral. Qualified candidates accepted to the Virginia State Police will be compensated at a salary of $48,719; however, applicants being accepted into positions covered under the Northern Virginia pay scale will be compensated at a salary of $60,874. Upon graduation, candidates are supplied all uniforms and equipment, including a take home car. Candidates would also be eligible for promotional and career progression opportunities as outlined in the State Police Manual. Candidates will also have the opportunity to serve in many exciting specialty positions across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to: enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia; investigating criminal and traffic offenses; effecting arrests; communicating effectively both orally and in writing; testifying in court; safely operating a law enforcement vehicle; effectively interviewing individuals; performing lifesaving functions; safely and effectively utilizing firearms; performing effective searches of people and property; and reading and comprehending a variety of legal and administrative documents.  
Minimum Qualifications
?Applicants must hold a current Virginia Law Enforcement Officer certification from the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS). ?Must be currently employed with a Virginia Law Enforcement organization or have been employed as a certified law enforcement officer with a Virginia Law Enforcement Organization within the last twenty-four (24) months. ?Must have a High School Diploma or GED. ?Must currently be a VCIN Operator or be eligible to become a VCIN Operator. ?Must be a United States citizen on day of testing. ?Must be of good character and reputation as established by an extensive background investigation. ?No restrictions on assignment to former home location. You must provide up to three (3) counties/cities where you are willing to accept assignment, or indicate your willingness to be assigned anywhere in Virginia. ?Sworn employees of the Bureau of Field Operations assigned to the field, excluding Division VII and Division V, Area 31, personnel, shall be assigned to a specific area and duty post by special order. The sworn employee's residence shall be located within the assigned area or in a city or incorporated town, within this state, which borders the assigned area. In addition to being able to live anywhere within one's area of assignment, a sworn employee may live within fifteen (15) miles from any border of his/her duty post boundary. ?Must be willing to travel at your own expense to Virginia State Police Headquarters located at 7700 Midlothian Turnpike, North Chesterfield, Virginia 23235 to complete testing throughout the pre-employment process. ?Must possess at least 20/20 binocular vision, corrected or uncorrected, and if uncorrected visual acuity is 20/100 or better binocular and 20/200 or better in worse eye. ?Meet minimum requirements for color vision test with or without corrected lenses. ?Must be capable of hearing normal frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 hertz at a pure tone level of 25 decibels or less and no greater than 45 decibels at 4000 and 6000 hertz when checked by the Audiometer Test. ?Must be in compliance with the Department's height/weight chart. ?Must be willing to work rotating shifts, holidays and weekends. ?Must be able to pass all required training while in the basic school. ?Must be in compliance with the Department's tattoo and body modification policies. ?Must be willing to stay at the State Police Training Academy Sunday night through Friday afternoon while participating in the eight (8) week training program.  
Preferred Qualifications
?Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a DCJS certified law enforcement officer conducting criminal investigations and patrol duties, which encompass crash investigation and traffic enforcement. ?Certified speed measurement (RADAR/LIDAR) operator status. ?CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers with First Aid conducted by American Red Cross. ?Associates Degree or higher. ?Intoxilyzer operator certified.
